J.J. Murphy, City Manager: Experienced Public Servant

J.J. Murphy, City Manager of Hobbs, New Mexico, has devoted most of his life to serving the public through his extensive military service, and through his long career as a professional civil servant. He has more than 13 years of experience in local government, and over 17 years of experience as a military officer in the US Air Force. Throughout the years, Murphy has shown skill in time management, media relations, labor relations, and especially budget control and public-private partnerships. It is his emphasis on partnerships and budgets that have brought the cities of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and Hobbs, New Mexico multiple successful economic development projects.

After J.J. Murphy earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, he wanted to continue his training so he could be a successful public servant. He went on to earn a Master’s degree from Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1998. In 2002, he accepted a position as the Deputy City Administrator in Wilkes-Barre, where he quickly began to make his mark. He was promoted to City Administrator in 2004, and began his journey in leading governmental agencies.

He saw his success in Wilkes-Barre and in the private sector propel him to the City Manager post in Hobbs, New Mexico. Under his leadership, Hobbs has seen an economic boom, and is one of the fastest growing cities of its size in the US. Murphy hopes to continue his education this summer. He was accepted to Northeastern University’s Doctorate program in Law and Policy.
